The debut album from Birmingham, which was released in October 1968 on "Liberty Records". The band was formed from the fragments of Birmingham "Nightriders", in 1966, once deprived of vocalist Mike Sheridan and guitarist Roy Wood. For a while Dave Pritchard, Greg Masters and Roger Spencer attracted Johnny Mann from another team collapsed recently - "Carl Wayne And The Vikings" - but, he quickly withdrew, and "Birmingham Evening Mail" there was an announcement about the search for the "interested young guitarist. "Thus, in the company of former "Nightriders" hit nineteen Jeff Lynne. The first single of the new "It's Only The Dog / My Friend", written for the fulfillment of the obligations under the contract with the company "Polydor", had nothing to do with the direction that the band chose the later. Spurred by new romantic trends, the group changed its name to the sublime "Idyll Race", which quickly turned into a more mundane "Idle Race"; gradually came to the fore Jeff Lynne, who took over the duties frontman, songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. Thanks to its preserved friendship with Roy Wood, is now enjoying a well-deserved success with "The Move", "Idle Race" got access to London "Advision Studios" non-business hours. Continuing to act in his district, the group now regularly travels to London. One recorded at the time the songs were Roy Wood song "Here We Go Round The Lemon Tree", is already implemented on the single The Move «Flowers In The Rain». It chose her label "Liberty Records" for release as the first EP, but, not wanting to pass for a cover band, "Idle Race" forbidden to publish it in England. And in October 1967 in the UK there was a single "Impostors Of Life's Magazine / Sitting In My Tree", consisting of songs by Jeff Lynne. Despite the compelling melody, the song did not hit the charts, but gained a lot of fans and media sympathy. The second, more famous single "The Skeleton And The Roundabout / Knocking Nails Into My House" was released in early 1968, to show the public what to expect from the planned album. Despite the lack of commercial success, "Idle Race" is rapidly gaining popularity among the underground and professional circles. Not accidentally turn on their debut album, "The Birthday Party" among the invited guests to watch "The Beatles", "The Move", Brian Jones and several DJs BBC. Eleven of the thirteen presented songs were written by Lynn and open the door to Wonderland populated by bizarre characters and decorated with stylish arrangements in the spirit of "Sergeant Pepper." And at concerts at the same time "Idle Race" showed himself a tougher side, including in the program versions of songs Hendrix, "Steppenwolf", "The Doors" and the original processing hit Tyrannosaurus Rex «Deborah».

In January 1970, Jeff Lynne is leaving "The Idle Race", decided to accept the offer of Roy Wood and join the group "The Move". Three inseparable friends Pritchard, Masters and Spencer take to themselves in a group instead of one double Lynn - vocalist Dave Walker and guitarist Mike Hopkins, and in 1971 released their third album - "Time Is". He is radically different from what he was doing Lynn - here Pritchard writes music in the style of "pastoral folk." But again there is no success ... Dave Walker goes "Savoy Brown", then "Fleetwood Mac". Singer comes Steve Gibbons - and "Idle Race" quietly becomes the group "Steve Gibbons Band".
