Curved Air - London rock band, one of the most unusual, technically equipped and underrated at the time progressive rock bands. In his work musicians put together the elements of hard rock, classical music, psychedelia, folk and jazz. The central figures of the first composition were keyboardist Francis Monkman (Francis Monkman), singer Sonja Kristina (Sonja Kristina Linwood) and virtuoso violinist Darryl Way (Darryl Way) ... Monkman studied music at Westminster School, and later - at the Royal College of Music, where he received Raymond Rusel Prize for masterly technique. After college, he became a member of the Chamber Orchestra Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. In 1968 he bought the first electric guitar and met bassist Robert Martin (Rob Martin). Soon they were joined by drummer Florian Pilkington-Miksa (Florian Pilkington-Miksa) and the trio began rehearsing. Their favorite artists at the time were Quicksilver Messenger Service, Savoy Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Once Monkman casual conversation at a music store with a guy who bought something for the violin: it was Darryl Way. Last brought to the group a pianist friend named Nick Simon: so formed a group of Sisyphus, in which Monkman took over the guitarist. He later recalled that Darryl and Nick greatly impressed the first recordings of Spirit: Music of the latter, in his opinion, and has become a determining influence for early Curved Air. All repertoire Sisyphus was the original and, according to the memoirs Monkman, very interesting, but no record of those days did not survive ... In late autumn 1969 Monkman learned that Galt McDermott (Composer and producer of the musical Hair) writes and continued looking for an accompanying band. Monkman later remembered as the moment: "Of course, the play« Who the Murderer Was? »To« Hair »was did not like, but it was cute pieces, and final part, I still remember. Had a good chance to use the guitar fuzz in the orchestral arrangement. This was something new: Robin Trower was the first who made this, in Procol Harum. music was recorded in the studio Lansdowne. George Martin apparently felt that Rob and Florian - "amateur", so in their place, invited session musicians. On drums played by the legendary Phil Seaman (mentor Ginger Baker). Its made in the studio, seated at the installation, and after all he flawlessly played, carried back to the top. viidet nothing like I no longer had. I was allowed to play game second guitar ... "On the band's name - Francis Monkman was a fan of the composer Terry Riley's minimalist, but in honor of his favorite songs of a Rainbow in Curved Air and he offered to call the group. Sonja Kristina proposed the introduction of a group of Mark Hanau, who later became the manager of Curved Air. She had already had experience behind the stage in the theater: Chrissie played a role in the London production of Hair (musical soundtrack included the song Frank Mills in her performance, soon released single), had a wide circle of friends in the British progressive scene (participants Hawkwind, Pink Fairies ...) January 1, 1970 Sonja Kristina received an official invitation to join the group. Christine with Monkmanom quickly formed an alliance author: basically, she wrote the lyrics to his compositions («Proposition», «It Happened Today», «What Happens When You Blow Yourself Up»). New, characteristic sound Curved Air emerged instantly. The group held the summer of 1970 a successful tour of the UK and has signed a contract with the newly formed record label Warner Bros. In this case, Warner Bros. participants had serious financial support and at its own expense all lodged in a huge apartment (Redington Road, Hampstead 87), executed under the ocean liner. Three first album Curved Air, recorded with the direct participation Monkman (according to All Music Guide), «all group provided a place in the annals of progressive rock." However, by the beginning of the work on the second of them as a part of creative differences emerged ("We Darryl respect each other's contributions, but did not agree practically in anything" - recalled Monkman). On this second album (as you might guess from its name) is present most successful single in the history of the band - Back Street Luv (# 4 in the UK Singles Chart), and the album was # 11 in the UK.
