Review by Thom Jurek

After leaving Brian Auger's band and becoming the musical and life partner of pianist/composer Keith Tippett, Julie Tippetts issued Sunset Glow, her first solo recording, in 1974 on the Polydor label. After her soul, pop, and R&B beginnings, Tippetts redeveloped her voice, taking it and her music in a different direction. She began to extend its reach in improvisation, breath control, and uncommon phrasing. She is one of the most compelling and original singers in recorded music's history. Sunset Glow is a curious recording, one that walks the razor's edge of composition and improvisation. Fans of Robert Wyatt's earlier solo records, Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard and Rock Bottom, will appreciate its strange song structures, varying dynamics, and knockout lineup -- Tippetts sings, plays piano, acoustic guitar, and percussion, and she is backed by a host of luminaries from the Canterbury Scene: Brian Godding, guitars; Keith Tippett, piano, harmonium; Mark Charig, cornet, tenor horn; Elton Dean, alto saxophone; Nick Evans, trombone; Brian Belshaw, bass; Harry Miller, bass; as well as African drum master Louis Moholo.

The set begins innocently enough with "Mind of a Child," a fairly straight-ahead Baroque pop song with a lilting piano line accompanying Tippetts' plaintive singing. But even here, with the channel-shifting production and suspended chords, Keith Tippett's harmonium providing a baseboard for everything, and the slightly off-kilter horns winding in and out of the backdrop, this is anything but a pop song. From here on it's almost anything goes, as "Oceans and Sky" brings jazz, free improv, prog rock, and blues to bear in a dynamite soaring wail of a tune that was virtually unlike anything else at the time. She pierces the sky with her improvising, opening her voice up with the heaviness and swallowing it whole. Many have criticized the simple lyric lines Tippetts wrote for these songs, but this is philistinism; her lyrics fit these melodies better than anything else could. They adorn simply, speak plainly, and offer the heart of the matter in each case. In that sense, they are truly poetic. If the production styles sound rooted in the '70s, it's all for the better. It's hard to imagine anyone making a record like this today -- because this is a singular achievement in any era. The set ends with "Behind the Eyes (For a Friend, R)," which listeners can safely assume is about Robert Wyatt, whose accident took place a bit before the album was recorded. Its stark, simple, shimmering glissando piano walks a simple line under the moaning, imploring, almost chant-like voice of Tippetts. It's a moving track that closes as fine a debut as one is likely to hear.

5.0 out of 5 stars
The Voice, May 16, 2000

Amazing! When I first heard this record one night on an "Outside" radio program some 20 years ago, I was astonished by the power of Julie Tippet's (ne: Driscoll's) voice and musical vision. I am still moved in the same way with every listening. Great horn work - by Elton Dean, among others. The title track and Lillies are standouts. Don't believe the 2 to 3 days shipping time however, think more like 2 months - it's a rare find.

Great companion piece to "Rock Bottom", August 30, 2002
By Joseph T. McFarland "Joe McFarland" (Natick, MA USA

Natick, MA United States)

Not much like the jazz-rock on some of her earlier albums, this is really something worth hearing. The songs are fairly long, but in a vaguely psychedelic way. It's an album to enjoy in totality, like Man's "Be Good To Yourself At Least Once a Day" or "Do You Like it Here Now, Are You Settling In?" Supposedly, it was considered by those concerned to be a kind of companion piece to Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom". It certainly has the same feel of introspection, but with a slightly more jazz feel and even a mantra on side two. The support by two members of the Blossom Toes (among others) gives it a group sound with some dissonance that keeps the record from becoming too precious.
For the most part it's an atmospheric group of songs. Some songs come across as a quieter version of the post-Blossom Toes album "Worker's Playtime" (by B.B. Blunder), which is also worth seeking out for its somewhat less optimistic update on the sixties psych sound. (Julie Tippets sings background vocals on that album as well.)

The four star rating is not five mainly because this album is of one mood, and so it may not please those looking for a more versatile listening experience. But on its own merits it might nudge up to four and a half (not a grading option as I write this). I play it more than "Rock Bottom", but those who are looking for a replay of that album might miss the weirdness and tape manipulation that Wyatt uses. This album, which was recorded about two years later, has a "mellower" feel like Terry Reid's "River" or any Sandy Denny album. The louder parts might also bring to mind Robert Wyatt's first album "End of An Ear."
This is one of those albums that must have sounded out of place in 1976 (subtlety not really being in demand), but it has aged well. Definitely worth hearing for those with more than a two-minute attention span and a desire for a meditative album that manages to be unsettling at the same time.

-----

Julie Tippetts began as Julie Driscoll, a popular singer in the 1960s straddling the lines between blues, jazz, and folk. She initially started out with keyboardist Brian Auger. Later on, she became the partner of pianist extraordinaire Keith Tippett. With Tippett, she became increasingly experimental, lending significant voice to his ambitious jazz-prog orchestra project Centipede and the 1971 release Septober Energy.

Sunset Glow was released in the mid-70s, and like Robert Wyatt's albums from around this time, it features a formidable supporting act of Canterbury veterans; most had played with Julie on her excellent 1969 album. The plaintive duskiness of "Mind of a Child" starts off sounding fairly conventional, but with such subtle touches like Tippett's harmonium and the introduction of dissonances from the horns, at first gently piercing then building to great blasts of sound, quickly distinguish this from the run-of-the-mill adult pop of the day. "Oceans and Sky" is another example of contained volatility that seems to bubble throughout this album. The song begins suggesting a seemingly straightforward blues shuffle, but proceeds to build up to a rakish climax of Julie's avant-vocalese, Tippett's masterful piano scurrying, and the vibrant arrangement of the Canterbury horns (unmistakable to anybody who's carefully perused the post-psychedelic Soft Machine albums).

The two masterpieces on this album, both unsettling in their unconventional beauty and casting an eye towards Eastern horizons, are "Sunset Glow" and "Lilies." Both tracks are particularly notable for conveying a polytonal quality (i.e., sounding as if being played in two different keys), a subcomponent of which is marked by OM-like repetitions (e.g., the punctuation of the repeated notes by horn and voice in the title track; the soft background chant in "Lilies"). Pushing and pulling against the remainder of the song, Tippetts overlays elaborate vocal harmonies: a dense, jazzy character in "Sunset Glow" and a discomfiting line of fifths-harmonies in "Lilies."

One minor criticism is that in a few spots (e.g., "Oceans and Sky") the lyrics could have reached for more, as the music almost always does. That's about all you could say might be improved. With a quiet greatness, this is strongly recommended for those who enjoy albums like Rock Bottom and Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard. In fact, I would imagine the last track, "Behind the Eyes" is a dedication to Wyatt.
